Classes Outside Marymount

If you are interested in enrolling in courses at a different institution, such as Northern Virginia Community College, there are a few steps you will need to complete to ensure that your academic record and immigration record are maintained. This process of being enrolled in classes outside of Marymount University is called Concurrent Enrollment.

Transferring Credits:

If the course is being offered by a neighboring institution (including Northern Virginia Community College - NVCC/NOVA), you should consult any posted articulations with those institutions, which can be found on the Registrar’s website.

If a Marymount University student wishes to take a course at any institution other than Marymount University and transfer the course back to Marymount for credit, they must take the following steps.

Steps to request Concurrent Enrollment:

  1. Meet with your Academic Advisor and complete either the Course Substitution and Transfer Form (CSTF) or the Consortium Registration Form
    • Your Academic Advisor can help you select and complete the correct form.
  2. Submit the correct form for processing to your academic department or to the office of the Registrar, depending on the form used.
    • This process may take up to three business days.
  3. Upload your Academic Advisor and (a) Academic Department or (b) Registrar approved form (whichever is appropriate for your situation) to the ISSS portal.
    1. Log in to the ISSS portal, click Tab 4, and select a "Class Outside Marymount" request.
    2. Your Course Substitution and Transfer Form or Consortium Registration Form, whichever is the appropriate form for your situation, must be signed by your Marymount University academic advisor before ISSS will review your request.

Once you have provided the required documentation, ISSS will issue you a Concurrent Enrollment Letter, giving you permission to enroll at the other institution. You must submit a Concurrent Enrollment Letter request even if your other school does not ask you for it.

If you use the Course Substitution and Transfer Form

1.  After you register for your course(s) at the other institution, upload a copy of that registration (such as your course enrollment schedule) to the ISSS portal. This is required so that ISSS can verify your full-time enrollment and maintain your F-1 status.

2. Once you complete the course at the other institution:

  • Submit the official transcript from the other school to the Marymount Registrar's Office. Note: you must earn a grade of C or higher to be eligible to transfer your credits to Marymount.

AND

  • Submit a copy of your official transcript to the ISSS office, regardless of your final grade(s). This is required to maintain your F-1 status. You must provide evidence that you completed the course(s) for a grade. Note: if the course(s) and/or credit(s) will be used to meet academic requirements to graduate from Marymount, then the credits must transfer to Marymount and appear on your Marymount academic record.

If you use the CONSORTIUM REGISTRATION FORM

After you enroll at the other institution, upload a copy of that registration (such as your course enrollment schedule) to the ISSS portal. This is required so that ISSS can verify your full-time enrollment and maintain your F-1 status.

More information about transferring credits to Marymount University, including credit maximums and processes, can be found on the Registrar’s Office website as well as in the University Catalog.

DO NOT DROP ANY COURSE without prior Marymount academic advisor and Marymount ISSS approval. Students who do not meet full-time study requirements and who do not have an approved Reduced Course Load for the current semester risk having their SEVIS record / I-20 terminated.

  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled for the entire semester in a minimum of 12 credits combined, of which at least 9 credits must be in-person (face-to-face or hybrid).
  • Graduate students must be enrolled for the entire semester in a minimum of 9 credits combined, of which at least 6 credits must be in-person (face-to-face or hybrid).
